Here are some examples of SDL at different levels:
BASIC BSL - “Fantasy Family”
Students create who they would like to be in their family. Maybe famous footballer as a father or a singer as a sister! Students then to present the family to small groups in the following class.
INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS - “Survey”
Getting students to research something or survey a viewpoint, & then present to small groups in the following class e.g. Health survey or “should smoking be banned” (assign each student a viewpoint - the smoker/non smoker/doctor/tobacco company)
ADVANCED STUDENTS – “Interview”
In pairs, students work together to either be the interviewer or the famous person and construct an interview. The famous person can be a well known/ famous person / deaf or hearing / dead or alive, and reflect them in their style of BSL.
ALL LEVELS– “Translation work”
Students are to find their own small piece of text & translate into BSL. Students come back into classroom and sign to each other in small groups. This gives students opportunity to chance to show their practice & development.
ALL LEVELS - “Identification of Grammatical features”
Assign a number of BSL features to be identified on a particular video that is given out. Students are to watch the video and list the grammar features and then feedback to small groups in the next class.
ALL LEVELS - “Grammar Errors”
Students to watch a signed video & identify purposely signed mistakes and then sign what they think is the correct version
