1.2 Assessing the needs and issues (BSL) learners

BSL - Video English - Transcript

BSL learners have expectations of quality because they pay fees for courses. They will be challenged by new language and need constant practice. In order to learn effectively they need a variety of activities within interesting lessons. They may be aiming for qualifications so teachers must encourage students to understand the need to work hard.

Students needs can be identified through careful observation, which will demonstrate their skill level, confidence and motivation.

They teacher can use these factors to aid development, build confidence and enhance motivation. Regular skills tests organised in class time will demonstrate progress and prepare students for formal assessments.

Progress is linked to students’ needs and teachers therefore should keep formal progress records on video as well as written records. Students’ self- evaluation forms can demonstrate progress and future needs.
