1.3 Motivation - Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation

BSL - Video English - Transcript

Motivation is an important factor in language learning. Students attracted to BSL will have the desire to communicate with Deaf people creating motivation, which teachers can use.

There are two kinds of motivation; the first is intrinsic which comes form inside the learner. They have a natural curiosity and interest in learning new language and everyone has an innate ability to learn language.

The second type of motivation is extrinsic which includes factors outside of students, such as, desire to communicate in a new language, make new friends, to be successful, gain qualifications, or perhaps find new employment.

Teachers can increase motivation by providing a welcoming organised classroom, show enthusiasm, organise a variety of tasks and groups as well as provide visual multi- media equipment and tasks. Video, CDROMS and the Internet are important to increase motivation. To increase their motivation students need support, praise and encouragement.
