1.1 Determining prior knowledge

BSL - Video English - Transcript

Prior knowledge is the knowledge that students possess before they begin the course.

They will have experience of studying in school or college, they may have experience of learning a new language and they may have knowledge of BSL.

The BSL teacher needs to determine prior knowledge, to identify gaps in their knowledge and identify students' strengths and areas of development.

To assess prior knowledge teachers can use detailed applications forms, they can interview students or organise a skills test before the course begins.

Questionnaires could be distributed to students at the beginning of the first session.

When the teacher is aware of the student’s knowledge they can use the level of BSL they really possess.

Teachers can then provide relevant materials and activities relevant to the students as well as the curriculum.
