The narrator tends to use "established" vocabulary signs, because it is the narrator's job to give facts, and establish certain things like places and situations. The characters are more likely to use "productive" signs because they move the action along and show what happened and what the reactions were. Basically, the narrator tells us things and the characters show us things. However, "characters" do not just act - they also talk. When the character talks, they do so from their perspective and in their own style with their own facial expression.
