Compound signs are made up of free morphemes. Compounds in English have a general rule that the second morpheme carries the basic sense of the compound and the first one modifies it. The following are compounds in English:
teapot, globetrot, chin-up, stir-fry, swear word, white hot, high school, dry-clean, blackout, lighthouse, blackboard, blackbird, tracksuit.
A teapot is a sort of pot for tea, to globe-trot is a sort of trotting that we do around the globe, when we stir-fry, we fry something in a particular way, and so on.
