4.4 BSL as a Minority Language

BSL - Video English - Transcript

BSL is a minority language surrounded by a powerful language, English. The influences of English on BSL can be seen in many ways through borrowing but these influences are the same as we see in any minority language surrounded by a powerful majority language. These languages have fewer resources (fewer teaching materials, for example) but their users will often passionately defend them. Deaf people often show great pride in BSL whereas English speakers rarely say they are “proud of English”.
