Knowledge
A good language teacher will need to have knowledge of;
1. The language,
2. A background knowledge of linguistics, and
3. An understanding of the skills required to teach.
Attributes
A teacher will need to have the following attributes;
1. An appropriate attitude to teaching,
2. Be self motivated and to motivate learners in the classroom,
3. Have experience of teaching or be open to new experiences,
4. To be aware of student’s expectations of attainment,
5. To be flexible to the varying needs of the students,
6. Have an understanding of professionalism in the classroom,
7. An ability to set aside strongly held beliefs and principles.
Training
A good teacher will be aware of the following needs:
1. A teacher qualification,
2. The ability to plan well – e.g. being able to design a proforma that clearly states the aims and objectives of the class and any planned activities, constructing timetables, and lesson planning.
3. Knowing how to manage the classroom,
4. Having a range of techniques to match the various levels of students,
5. Monitoring the progress of students,
6. Positive interaction with students – the patterns of interaction can be;
- TS Teacher – Student
- SS Student – Student (either working in pairs or as a group)
- ST Student – Teacher
- TT Teacher – Teacher
7. Method of teaching – Learner Centred Approach,
8. A teaching style that keeps students interested and enthusiastic,
9. Knowledge of the teacher’s role,
10. Ensuring the use of varied activities,
11. Appreciating that learning experiences can take place in and out of the classroom,
12. Being able to give clear instructions,
13. Professional development, including; ongoing training, peer observations in the classroom, review of classroom practices.
